Model Club’s New Flying Field Ready—Military Welcome, by Larry Kruse

It’s been a busy year for the Lawton Area Fun Flyers Society radio control model airplane club since the model flying site at Ft. Sill was closed, but everything is now in place for the new outdoor flying season, according to Ken Isaac, the club’s president. “We’re particularly pleased to have our new flying field complete and available this year,” Isaac said, “and we welcome members of the military who currently participate in the hobby or would like to do so. We have several model flyers posted at Ft. Sill who are currently club members and would like to have others join us. Because of deployments and re-assignments, we have special provisions for short-term club membership.”

Located at the intersection of Old Cache Road and Deyo Mission Road, the new flying field features a 450 foot runway, taxi-ways and a pit area. The runway is paved with a heavy polypropylene material donated by the Elk City Flying Aces model club when they resurfaced their field. Club members installed the material during several work days early last year and donated labor and materials to complete the pit area, which now includes six starting stations and a utility work table.

Isaac said there are more improvements in the planning stages, but for now the field is in excellent condition and will be used whenever the weather permits. He said, “Like many activities here in southwest Oklahoma, we are weather dependent. We do invite spectators to come out and watch us fly any time we’re in the air. There is ample parking and a restroom facility available, so all family members are welcome.”
