LAFFS Flight Report- Sunday, 17 August 2014

Well, this isn’t going to be much of a flight report because I got there late, about 10:00, and missed the earlier action. I saw Ron fly The Beast and Paul flew Miguel’s very nice foam P-51 which Paul said was a little handful. Miguel flew his Cessna, which was real nice in the air. His lady even joined us to watch and we found out she has some interest in learning to flly. Gene was there helping with wisdom and enjoying the day. Mike was there, too, but I got there too late to see if he put on an airshow. There were a couple of other guys there earlier, but I’m not sure who they were.

I showed up with a new Radian sailplane, which was such a joy to fly. It was a perfect thermaling day and the Radian was the perfect airplane. There was no wind except for the occasional inrush to fill the void where a thermal boomed up. The Radian was a master of thermals, much more than I expected. It sure does climb, too. I climbed it straight up and even past the vertical till it was on it’s back and it was still going up. Amazing.

There was so much thermal activity that sometimes it was hard to get the plane to come down. I flew two flights for a total of about an hour and had only used 60% of my battery. I had landed both times because my neck had gotten stiff from looking up. It could not have been better, sitting in the shade of the shed and flying so leisurely that it hardly took any attention. We sat and talked and watched a hawk making lazy circles in the sky. Hmmm, why does that sound so familiar?

It was a fine day with fine friends, plen’y of air and plen’y of room. We were doin’ fine–Oklahoma!
